On the afternoon of November 18, the 4th Fujian EISA Final (taiko competition) was unveiled in Fuzhou’s Three Lanes and Seven Alleys. Co-hosted by Okinawa Prefectural Government, Okinawa Industry Promotion Public Corporation (OIPPC) and Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, it attracted taiko teams from five universities in Fujian, including Fujian Normal University, Huaqiao University, Fuzhou University, Minjiang University and FNU Concord University College.

In his remarks, Mr. Chen Chuxin, Vice President of Fujian Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said that “Okinawa taiko” has already taken root in Fujian universities, becoming a cultural brand for youth exchanges between the two sides. He hoped that universities students in Fujian would use their imagination and creativity to integrate “Fujian” elements into the taiko, so that they may create a distinctive “Fujian-Okinawa taiko”, enriching the “taiko” culture.

Contestants from the five universities put on innovative and wonderful performances. The thunderous sound of the taiko and the exciting atmosphere attracted a huge crowd of spectators. FNU Concord University College taiko team won out with its Han Chinese costume, “Chinese style” choreography and excellent taiko performance, while Fujian Normal University and Huaqiao University came in 2nd and 3rd. Hirata Daichi, a guest judge from Okinawa and an OIPPC consultant, commented, “Chinese elements make Okinawa taiko more innovative and appealing.”

Since 2012, Fujian and Okinawa Prefecture have worked together to promote the taiko in Fujian. So far, four such competitions have been held. Through the competitions, cultural exchanges and mutual understanding and friendship between the youth of the two provinces have been expanded.
